Postpartum "Mum Thumb" Pain: What It Is and How Osteopathy Can Help

If you’re a new mum struggling with pain in your thumb or wrist, you might be dealing with a common condition known as “Mum Thumb” — medically referred to as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. This painful inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist is incredibly common in the postnatal period, especially with all the lifting, feeding, and carrying that comes with caring for your newborn.

As a Milford osteopath specialising in postpartum care, I regularly see new mums affected by this condition. The good news? There are ways to manage the pain — and osteopathic treatment offers a gentle, effective approach to support your recovery.

What Causes Mum Thumb After Birth?

Mum Thumb (De Quervain’s tenosynovitis) happens when the tendons that run along the side of the wrist become irritated and inflamed. This is usually due to:

  • Repetitive movements, such as lifting and cradling your baby with bent wrists

  • Poor wrist alignment during feeding or rocking

  • Hormonal changes in pregnancy and postpartum, which can affect soft tissue

  • Weakened postnatal muscles, especially in the arms and upper back, placing more strain on smaller joints like the wrist

It often starts as a dull ache and can become sharp or burning, especially with thumb movement, gripping objects, or lifting baby.

Common Symptoms of Postpartum Wrist Pain

  • Pain at the base of the thumb or wrist (especially with movement)

  • Swelling near the thumb

  • Difficulty gripping, holding, or lifting objects

  • Pain that worsens when lifting your baby under their arms

  • Discomfort during breastfeeding or bottle-feeding positions

Tips to Relieve Mum Thumb Pain at Home

Here are a few ways to ease postpartum wrist pain on your own:

  • Modify how you lift baby – Scoop baby under their bottom rather than under their arms

  • Use both hands and avoid twisting your wrist

  • Support your wrist with a soft splint or wrap if recommended

  • Apply ice packs to reduce inflammation

  • Take regular breaks and stretch your wrist and forearm gently

  • Adjust feeding posture – Use pillows to support baby and avoid curling your wrist

How Osteopathy Helps Relieve Mum Thumb Pain

Osteopathic treatment is a safe, non-invasive approach to help new mums recover from De Quervain’s tenosynovitis. My hands-on approach focuses on treating not just the painful wrist, but also addressing the underlying tension patternscontributing to it.

During your session, I may use gentle techniques to:

  • Reduce tightness and inflammation in the forearm and wrist muscles

  • Improve circulation and lymphatic drainage to support healing

  • Address postural imbalances in the neck, shoulders and upper back

  • Offer feeding and lifting advice to protect your wrist long term

  • Promote overall comfort and mobility so you can enjoy motherhood

Osteopathy helps relieve pain, support healing, and prevent symptoms from worsening or becoming chronic.
